What is a digital wallet?

A digital wallet refers to an electronic device or online service that allows an individual to store payment card information which can then be used for electronic transactions. This can include purchasing items online with a computer or using a smartphone to purchase something at a store.

Faster and more secure than normal card transactions

Digital wallets allow you to quickly transfer your payment information to web sites, saving you the time and hassle of completing online order forms. Your in-store checkout times are also faster because you no longer have to get out your card, swipe or insert it, and provide a PIN or signature. Simply hold your phone or watch against the terminal and within seconds, your payment will be complete.

Digital wallets protect sensitive card data by replacing it with secure, surrogate data, called a token. When a digital wallet is used to make a payment, it only provides the token information to the merchant, so your card details are not exposed.
